Women’s Basketball This Week Presented by Fairfield Inn & Suites Whitewater (Jan. 24-30)

The No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team continues Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday before closing its non-conference schedule Sunday.
 
The Warhawks (16-2, 7-1 WIAC) host UW-Stevens Point this Wednesday at 7 p.m. for Staff Appreciation Night at Kachel Gymnasium. Wednesday's game can be viewed live on UWW-TV on channel 100.1 on campus, Spectrum channel 989 for subscribers in the area or online at uwwtv.org.
 
UW-W hosts Lake Forest (Ill.) Sunday at 2 p.m. for Parents Day at Kachel Gymnasium. The game, which was originally scheduled to be played Dec. 29, can be watched live online.
 
On Saturday, UW-Whitewater closed to within one point with just over two minutes to play but was outscored 9-0 the rest of the way in an 81-71 setback at No. 18 UW-Eau Claire. Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) tallied 25 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead UW-W, which was held to 31.3 percent shooting, including 20 percent in the fourth quarter. Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) and Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) each added 11 points.
 
Earlier in the week, the Warhawks held UW-La Crosse to 28.8 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers in a 60-48 victory on the road. Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) finished with 13 points to pace UW-W, which outscored the Eagles 21-12 in the third quarter to break open a close game. Grundahl totaled 10 points, and Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) collected nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and five blocks.
 
Wednesday, Jan. 26, 7 p.m. – vs. UW-Stevens Point (TV: UWW-TV)
 
UW-Stevens Point (9-6, 2-4) dropped both of its games last week, falling 67-49 at home against UW-La Crosse. The Pointers were limited to 27.7 percent shooting while the Eagles shot 45.1 percent from the floor and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from 3-point range.
 
Taylor Greenheck leads UW-Stevens Point in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game to go along with a team-high 5.1 rebounds per game. Jamie Pfeifer averages 8.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 46.7 percent from the floor.
 
The Warhawks turned 25 turnovers by the Pointers into 33 points at the other end and shot 46.8 percent from the floor, including 8-of-15 from 3-point range, in a 79-53 victory back on Dec. 1. Grundahl registered a game-high 20 points with five rebounds, Kieres finished with 13 points and Trautsch and Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) each recorded eight points.
 
UW-Stevens Point holds a 46-44 edge in the all-time series between the two teams, but UW-Whitewater enters Wednesday night on a nine-game winning streak against the Pointers.
 
Sunday, Jan. 30, 2 p.m. – vs. Lake Forest
 
Lake Forest enters the week with a 4-10 record, including back-to-back losses over the weekend. The Foresters are 2-6 in the Midwest Conference after falling 61-48 at Cornell on Sunday. LFC was outrebounded 53-30 in the contest, including a 24-7 margin on the offensive glass.
 
Entering the week, three players average double figures in scoring for Lake Forest – Katie Neher (14.1 points per game), Annie Lally (13.2) and Maurissa Edwards (10.1). Lally leads the team in rebounding (5.1 per game), Neher owns a team-best 33 assists, and Edwards paces the team with 29 steals.
 
The Warhawks and Foresters last met on Nov. 26, 2005, at Kachel Gymnasium. UW-Whitewater made 27-of-43 from the free-throw line and forced 29 turnovers in an 83-70 victory. Jessica Wendt led the team with 17 points and five rebounds. UW-W leads the all-time series by a 3-1 margin.
 
Lake Forest visits Monmouth (Ill.) on Wednesday and Lawrence on Saturday before completing the three-game road stretch in Whitewater.
