The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team was unable to overcome hot shooting by UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon in a 74-63 setback at Kachel Gymnasium in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
The Warhawks (11-7 overall, 4-3 WIAC) fell behind by double digits early in the second half and couldn't complete a comeback attempt. The Blugolds shot 54.2 percent from the floor in the contest, including a 58.3 percent clip in the second half.
Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) tallied a career-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting and added a team-best six rebounds.
Elijah Lambert (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) totaled 13 points and four rebounds off the bench, and
Gage Malensek (Brookfield, Wis./Central) posted nine points and a team-high eight assists.
UW-Eau Claire (9-10, 2-6) started the game on an 8-2 run, but UW-Whitewater quickly erased the deficit with a 15-2 run for a 17-10 advantage with 11:45 on the clock following a putback layup by
Caleb Flaten-Moore (Ixonia, Wis./Oconomowoc).
The Warhawks held the lead until the 5:47 mark, when the Blugolds tied the score at 20-20. Capstran gave UW-W a five-point lead with 2:30 to go in the half, but UW-Eau Claire closed the period on an 11-2 run for a 32-28 halftime lead.
An 8-0 run early in the second half gave UW-Eau Claire a 15-point lead with 15:54 on the clock.
After the Blugolds built their lead to 18, UW-Whitewater scored 11 straight points to close to within 58-51 with 7:40 remaining.
UW-Eau Claire built its advantage back up to double digits, and the Warhawks couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
UW-Whitewater visits UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at 7 p.m.
