The No. 14 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team started competition in the new calendar year Thursday night with a 29-15 victory at No. 3 UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual.
The Warhawks (7-1 overall, 2-1 WIAC) won four of the eight contested bouts and claimed forfeits at 133 and 149 pounds on their way to the dual victory.
Dakarai Clay (Madison, Wis./Madison East) earned an impressive 17-15 decision at 141 pounds against Tyler Shackle, who is listed as a Contender by D3wrestle.com. He improved to 12-4 with the win.
Wrestling up to the 157-pound weight class,
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), ranked seventh at 149 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and ninth by D3wrestle.com, earned eight points in the third period on his way to a 17-2 technical fall at 6:19 against Aaron Bahr. He improved to 14-2 on the year.
Other UW-Whitewater winners included
Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively.
Vedner (13-4 record) posted three takedowns in the third period for a 14-5 major decision against Nolan Paar. Shinhoster (14-2), ranked fifth in the nation by D3wrestle.com and the NWCA, tallied two four-point near falls on his way to a 15-0 technical fall at 3:55 against Isaac Gust.
The Warhawks head to Elmhurst, Ill., this Saturday for the annual Al Hanke Invitational. Competition begins at 9 a.m. Spectators are not permitted at the tournament, but fans can follow the action live via TrackWrestling.
