The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team posted strong results Sunday at Carthage's Firebird Challenge/Battle of the Birds in Kenosha, Wis.
The Warhawks entered six two-man teams into the tournament's five flights. Competition included players from Carthage, Illinois Tech, North Central and UW-Whitewater. Each doubles and singles match was an eight-game pro set.
At the No. 1 flight,
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) each finished undefeated for the day, combining for a 2-0 record in doubles while each finishing 2-0 in singles. the duo faced the top pairs from North Central and Carthage.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) finished 2-0 in doubles at the second flight. Adkisson earned two singles victories, while Pietila split his singles matches.
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) split their doubles matches, and Mitchell collected two wins in singles, surrendering only three games in the two matches.
In Flight 3,
Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) and
Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) split their doubles matches, and Hearne topped both North Central and Illinois Tech in singles play.
Noah Wankerl (Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) tallied a 2-0 record in singles at the fourth flight. He and
Josh Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) were edged in a pair of closely-contested doubles contests.
At No. 5,
Ridley Aranda (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) and
Josh Baldwin (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) swept North Central in doubles and singles. Baldwin completed a singles sweep with a win against Illinois Tech.
UW-Whitewater is scheduled to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional from Oct. 1-4 in St. Peter, Minn.
