The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team closed a non-conference doubleheader at Millikin Sunday with a 5-1 victory in Decatur, Ill.
The Warhawks (4-4 overall) were defeated by the same 5-1 score in the first game.
In Game 2, UW-Whitewater scored runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and pitchers
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and
Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) combined to allow only one run on seven hits. Dick earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the year, and Hollatz collected the save, tossing the final 2 1/3 innings in relief.
The Warhawks scored the first run of the game on an error in the third inning, and centerfielder
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) drove home another in the fourth to give the team a 2-0 advantage.
After the Big Blue (6-4) made it 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) walked with the bases loaded to bring the UW-W margin back to two runs.
Hollatz stranded a pair of Millikin runners in the bottom of the fifth, and UW-Whitewater took advantage of the momentum in the sixth as designated player
Sydney Anderson (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) and pinch hitter
Kennedy Cox (Janesville, Wis./Craig) each tallied run-scoring doubles.
First baseman
Kaleigh O'Brien (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) totaled three hits and scored one run to lead the offense. Right fielder
Vera Pflugradt (Lake Zurich, Ill./Stevenson) walked twice and scored one run.
In the opener, the Warhawks were held to four hits, and the Big Blue scored all five of their runs in the first two frames.
Pitchers
Kate Cleveland (DePere, Wis./Ashwaubenon),
Marissa Adams (Le Roy, Ill./Le Roy),
Annie Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and
Kathryn Kinsella (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) combined to strand eight Big Blue runners. Cleveland dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
Pflugradt registered two hits and drove in the lone UW-Whitewater run with a double in the fifth inning. Dunning drew a two-out walk and came around to score on Pflugradt's hit.
The Warhawks return to action Monday as they host nationally-ranked Carroll. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. The games were originally scheduled to be played Tuesday, but were moved up 24 hours due to anticipated inclement weather.
