The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team won its first four matches Tuesday night and didn't look back on its way to a 23-12 victory over No. 14 UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual at Russell Arena.
The Warhawks (2-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC) claimed six of the first seven bouts and held on as the Blugolds dropped to 0-2 on the year.
Alex Barbarise (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) improved to 2-0 at 125 pounds, starting the night with an 11-7 decision over Jack Marley to give UW-W the early lead.
Ethan Porgorzelski followed suit at 133 pounds with a 5-2 decision, using first and second period takedowns for his first victory of the year.
Sophomore
Josiah Lynden (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) nearly doubled the Warhawk lead by securing a technical fall, 18-0, late in the second period at 141.
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) tallied four points in the third period to score a 5-4 decision over Jake Drexler, who is ranked sixth in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and eighth by D3wrestle.com.
After a UW-EC pin,
Tommy Hoy (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel Catholic) and
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) earned back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Hoy broke a 2-2 tie with three in the third period for his 5-2 decision, and Shinhoster, the nation's consensus No. 5 wrestler at 174, claimed a 19-5 major decision.
Following consecutive Blugold decisions,
Dylan Uzumecki (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) closed the dual on a high note for UW-W, improving to 2-0 with a 4-2 decision at 285 pounds.
The Warhawks host a double dual Friday starting at 3 p.m. They'll take on UW-Platteville and No. 5 UW-La Crosse.
