The Warhawks (1-1 overall, 1-1 WIAC) erased a 10-point deficit in the second half and had a final possession to tie or take the lead, but came up short Wednesday in a 70-68 loss against UW-Stevens Point in the season opener at Kachel Gymnasium. Gage Malensek (Brookfield, Wis./Central) registered 22 points, five assists and two steals for UW-Whitewater, which shot 52.1 percent from the floor but was outscored in points off turnovers (15-8) and second-chance points (11-4). Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) added 14 points and three rebounds.

UW-W rebounded Friday for a 91-78 triumph in Stevens Point, shooting a robust 70.2 percent (33-of-47) from the floor and a blazing 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from 3-point range. Both percentages rank among the top 10 in program history for highest in one game.

Malensek tallied a game-high 31 points to go with six rebounds and six assists, and Jack Brahm (Bayside, Wis./Glendale Nicolet) contributed a career-high 17 points off the bench on 6-of-7 shooting and added five rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh (1-1, 1-1) also split its first two regular season games, falling 88-75 at UW-Platteville on Wednesday before responding with a 77-68 victory on Friday in Oshkosh.

Through two games, Eddie Muench leads the Titans in scoring with 19.0 points per contest on 53.8 percent shooting, including 50 percent (9-of-18) from 3-point range. Eric Peterson is nearly averaging a double-double with 12.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per affair.

Last season, UW-Oshkosh took both games in the series. UW-W led with 22 seconds left in the first game between the two teams before the Titans hit a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to take the lead for good.

UW-Oshkosh holds a narrow 100-94 lead in the all-time series between the two teams, but the Warhawks are 25-18 against the Titans under head coach Pat Miller.
