The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team started its 2021 season Friday night with a 20-18 victory over UW-Stevens Point in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual at Russell Arena in Whitewater.
Trailing 18-7, the Warhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC) won three straight bouts on their way to victory.
Freshman
Alex Barbarise (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) put UW-Whitewater on the board with a 7-1 decision at 125 points. He earned a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal on his way to a win in his Warhawk debut.
After Pointers (0-1, 0-1) took a 6-3 lead, sophomore
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) put UW-W back ahead with a 16-6 major decision at 149. After the first period ended in a 6-6 tie, he earned a four-point nearfall to build his lead in the second, and added a takedown and riding time point in the third.
Junior
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington), ranked fifth in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and D3wrestle.com, moved up to 184 pounds and posted a win by fall following a second-period takedown.
Junior
Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect), also competing up a weight class at 197, picked up a 5-1 decision thanks to takedowns in the second and third periods.

Dylan Uzumecki (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) completed the Warhawks' comeback, tallying an 11-1 major decision with nearfalls in the second and third.
