Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Rides Hot Shooting to Road Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team responded from a narrow loss earlier in the week with a strong performance on the road in a 91-78 victory at UW-Stevens Point in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.

After falling 70-68 Wednesday against the Pointers, the Warhawks (1-1 overall, 1-1 WIAC) shot a blazing 70.2 percent (33-of-47) from the floor, the sixth-highest percentage in one game in program history, and converted 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from 3-point range, the eighth-highest figure in the school record book.

Gage Malensek (Brookfield, Wis./Central) continued his strong offensive start to the season, tallying a game-high 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. He added six rebounds and six assists in the effort.

Jack Brahm (Bayside, Wis./Glendale Nicolet) hit 6-of-7 shots on his way to a career-high 17 points to go with five rebounds off the bench. Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) posted 13 points and team highs of seven rebounds and two blocks, and Breontae Hunt (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) collected 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

JT Hoytink (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) added 11 points for UW-Whitewater, which capitalized on UW-Stevens Point turnovers for a 20-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Warhawks never trailed after the 18:35 mark of the first half, doubling up the Pointers 20-10 by the 12:19 mark. UW-W built its lead up to 14 following a pair of free throws by Brahm with 3:55 left in the period, and held a 44-34 lead by halftime.

UW-Stevens Point (1-1, 1-1) got as close as six points in the second half, but the Warhawks continued their strong offensive play as Chislom put the lead back up to 13 with 13:16 on the clock.

From there, UW-Whitewater never led by fewer than three possessions.

The Warhawks visit UW-Oshkosh Wednesday. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
