The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team kicked off the 2021 season Saturday with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet against Winona State (Minn.), competing for the first time against an opponent in nearly one year.
The Warhawks tallied 165.800 team points despite being short two competitors on the uneven bars.
UW-Whitewater started the meet on vault, posting a 46.525, the team's highest in any event at the meet. The Warhawks swept the top three spots as
Meg McGinley (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) won the event with a 9.450.
Lauren Goble (Aurora, Colo./Legend), making her UW-W debut, finished second with a 9.375, and
Blaise Wilson (Thornton, Colo./Legacy) tied for third with a 9.350.
Faith Mylin (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian Academy) scored a 9.325 to tie for fifth, and
Abby Kappler (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) placed 10th with a 9.025.
Wilson and
Emily North (Oklahoma City, Okla./Moore) led the Warhawks on bars, placing first and second, respectively. Wilson registered a 9.500, while North recorded a 9.300. Mylin placed eighth with her 8.300.
The Warhawks also finished 1-2-3 on balance beam as Wilson claimed first place in her second event of the night with a 9.625. North scored a 9.450 to place second, and
Karina Sabol (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) finished third with a 9.350. McGinley finished fifth with a 9.250, and Goble placed seventh with her 8.650. UW-W tallied a 46.325 as a team on beam, the team's second-highest mark of the day.
Sabol and Mylin finished first and second, respectively, on floor exercise to lead UW-Whitewater to a team tally of 45.850 in the event. Sabol scored a 9.575, while Mylin totaled a 9.525. Wilson finished fourth with a 9.400,
Maycee Smith (West Branch, Iowa/West Branch) placed sixth with an 8.800, and McGinley rounded out Warhawk scoring with an 8.550, good for eighth place.
Wilson and Mylin competed as all-arounders for UW-W. Wilson scored a 37.875, while Mylin finished as runner-up with a 35.250.
Saturday's meet was also Parents Day, Alumni Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Russell Arena. As they do each season for one meet, the Warhawks wore pink uniforms to promote breast cancer awareness.
UW-Whitewater resumes competition March 13 at UW-Stout. The dual is set to begin at 4 p.m. in Menomonie.
