Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Outlasted in Overtime

Five players scored in double figures for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team Wednesday night, but the Warhawks fell just short in a 93-90 overtime defeat against UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks (1-5 overall, 1-5 WIAC) held a four-point lead with under a minute to play in regulation, but the Blue Devils forced the extra period thanks to a 3-pointer on the next possession and a layup with three seconds remaining.

UW-W led 88-85 with two minutes left in overtime following a layup by Derek Gray (Madison, Wis./La Follette). UW-Stout then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to flip the lead with 50 seconds to go.

Gage Malensek (Brookfield, Wis./Central) brought the Warhawks to within one on a layup, but the Blue Devils responded with another bucket on the other end to re-take a 3-point lead. UW-W's game-tying, 3-point attempt at the other end rattled around the rim and out.

Malensek and Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) led UW-Whitewater with 19 points apiece. Gray posted 16 points along with a team-high nine rebounds, and Jack Brahm (Bayside, Wis./Glendale Nicolet) collected 11 points and five rebounds.

Will Schultz (Brookfield, Wis./Chicago Hope Academy) contributed 12 points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench, and Breontae Hunt (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) tallied eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Warhawks shot 48.6 percent from the floor, more than three percentage points better than the Blue Devils (2-5, 2-5), but UW-Stout took advantage of 18 offensive rebounds with 13 second-chance points.

The two teams traded the lead over the course of the first half. The Blue Devils led by as many as five, but Gray's layup in the final minute tied the score at 38-38 by halftime.

UW-Whitewater led 56-49 with 12:36 to go in the second half and held the advantage until the 3:56 mark, when UW-Stout took a 74-73 lead.

A 3-point play by Chislom gave the Warhawks the lead back with just under two minutes on the clock, and another layup on a put-back by Chislom made it 82-78 with 55 seconds remaining.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Stout hit the floor again Friday at 7 p.m. in Menomonie. The game is the regular season finale for both teams.
