The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and knocked down better than 75 percent from the free-throw line Saturday during a 92-76 victory against UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Kachel Gymnasium.
The Warhawks (5-2 overall, 2-0 WIAC) made 30-of-61 from the floor and 24-of-31 from the free-throw line and turned 20 Blue Devil turnovers into 23 points on the other end.
Derek Gray (Madison, Wis./La Follette) led all scorers with a career-high 30 points on 9-of-18 from the floor and 10-of-11 at the free-throw line while adding eight rebounds and three steals.
Jack Brahm (Bayside, Wis./Glendale Nicolet) tallied 18 points, six rebounds and three blocks, and
Gage Malensek (Brookfield, Wis./Central) collected 16 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Breontae Hunt (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) also finished in double figures in scoring with 10 points to go along with five rebounds.
UW-Whitewater took the lead for good on its first basket of the game, a floater by Malensek in the lane at the 19:25 mark of the first half.
UW-Stout (5-2, 1-1) drew to within 12-11 with 16:11 on the clock, but the Warhawks rebuilt their advantage and increased it to double digits with 7:30 remaining on a layup by Brahm that made it 31-21.
The Blue Devils closed to within five, but UW-W pushed its lead back to double digits, with a 10-0 run near the end of the period giving the team a 45-30 advantage with 1:04 left. UW-Whitewater matched its largest lead of the half as
Carter Capstran (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) hit a pair of free throws to make the score 49-33 going into halftime.
UW-W's lead never dipped below 11 over the first nine minutes of the second half before UW-Stout pulled to within 64-56 at the 10:40 mark.
The Warhawks retook their double-digit lead for good on a layup by Brahm with 7:44 remaining. UW-W took its largest lead of the game at 92-74 with 1:40 to play following a free throw by Hunt.
UW-Whitewater visits Lake Forest (Ill.) Wednesday at 7 p.m.
