The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team started play at the Daytona Beach Shootout Sunday with a 91-50 victory against Alfred (N.Y.) in a non-conference contest in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Warhawks (9-0 overall) held the Saxons to 26.6 percent shooting in the game and forced 31 turnovers. UW-W finished with advantages in points off turnovers (38-16), points in the paint (62-28), second-chance points (19-8) and fast-break points (15-4).
Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) paced a balanced scoring effort for UW-Whitewater, totaling 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) also finished in double figures in scoring with 13 points to go with four rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) recorded eight points, four rebounds and three steals, while
Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) and
Courtney Oomens (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) each collected eight points and five rebounds.
Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) led the Warhawks in both assists (5) and steals (6) to go with her four points, and
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) grabbed a team-best seven rebounds to go with her six points.
UW-Whitewater never trailed in the game and never led by fewer than one possession after Belschner made a put-back layup to make the score 8-3 with 5:59 on the clock in the first quarter.
Alfred (5-2) cut its double-digit deficit to seven at the 2:04 mark following four straight points, but Schumacher countered with a 3-pointer on the next possession to get the UW-W lead to 19-9.
The Warhawks continued to build their lead in the second quarter, pushing it to 24 following a 12-0 run capped by Carollo's steal and layup with 1:58 remaining in the period. The UW-W lead spiked to as many as 26 but was back down to 24 by halftime.
UW-Whitewater's advantage ballooned to 30 just past the midway point of the third quarter on a steal and jumper by Carollo.
A total of 17 Warhawks saw playing time in the fourth quarter as the team extended its lead to as many as 43 points.
UW-Whitewater plays its second and final game in the tournament Monday at 1 p.m. Central Time against Centre (Ky.).
