No. 18 Wrestling Tops No. 13 UW-Oshkosh

The No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team broke an 11-11 tie by winning five consecutive matches, including two by fall, on Friday night on its way to a 32-11 victory against 13th-ranked UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
The Warhawks (6-1 overall, 1-1 WIAC) won eight of the 10 bouts in their final dual of the calendar year.
 
Tyler Klein (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) started the match with his 11th victory of the season, earning a 3-2 decision at 125 pounds, with all three of his points coming in the second period.
 
Following a pin by the Titans (6-1, 2-1), Dakarai Clay (Madison, Wis./Madison East) gave UW-W the lead again, picking up a pair of takedowns and the riding time point in the third period for a 13-4 major decision at 141 pounds. He improved to 11-4 on the season.
 
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), who is fifth in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association national ranking at 149 pounds, earned the Warhawks' second straight major decision, tallying six third-period points and the riding time point for a 12-3 triumph. He is now 13-2 for the year.
 
After UW-Oshkosh tied the dual, Tommy Hoy (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel Catholic) gave UW-Whitewater the lead for good with a 3-2 decision at 165. Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) scored a 14-8 decision at 174 before Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington), ranked fourth by both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com, provided one of the highlights of the dual with a pin in 25 seconds at 184 pounds. Hoy improved to 9-4 on the season, Vedner improved to 12-4 and Shinhoster tallied his 13th win.
 
Chad Richards (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) jumped out to an early lead with a takedown at 197 for an 8-2 decision, and Cadin Koeppel (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove), ranked ninth in the nation by D3wrestle.com, concluded the dual with a pin just before the first-period buzzer. Richards is now 9-4, while Koeppel improved to 10-4.
 
The Warhawks head to the North Central Invitational Saturday for their final competition of the month. The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m.
