Defense, Balanced Scoring Paces No. 4 Women’s Basketball at Loras

The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team remained undefeated with its third consecutive true road win Saturday, defeating Loras 83-54 in a non-conference affair in Dubuque, Iowa.
 
Five players scored in double figures offensively for the Warhawks (6-0 overall), who shot 49.2 percent from the floor, including a 59.3 percent clip (16-of-27) in the second half.
 
Defensively, UW-Whitewater forced 30 turnovers and held the Duhawks (3-2) to 40.4 percent shooting, including 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range. UW-W outscored Loras 15-3 at the free-throw line and 26-4 in points off turnovers.
 
Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) paced the Warhawks with 15 points to go with four rebounds and four steals. Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) tallied 12 points and seven steals, while Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) finished with 11 points, four rebounds, a team-high four assists and two blocks.
 
Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) collected 10 points, three rebounds and three steals, and Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) registered 10 points, three rebounds and three assists off the bench.
 
UW-Whitewater held Loras scoreless until the 5:22 mark of the first quarter, when the Duhawks drew to within 8-2. Carollo gave the Warhawks a nine-point lead with a 3-pointer nearly two minutes later, and Trautsch pushed the UW-W advantage to 10 with a steal-and-layup with under a minute to go in the period.
 
Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) scored the first five points of the second to push UW-Whitewater's lead to 15 just over a minute into the quarter. UW-W held its double-digit advantage for the entire period, building it to as many as 21 following a 3-pointer by Trautsch with 2:04 left.
 
The Duhawks closed the half on a 5-0 run to draw within 38-22, and made it 42-29 with 7:41 remaining in the third quarter.
 
From there, the Warhawks scored seven straight points, including five from Taylor, to make it a 20-point game just before the midway point of the quarter. Another 7-0 UW-W run later in the period, including five points by Schumacher, pushed the advantage to 26 points with 2:56 to play.
 
UW-Whitewater's lead never dipped below 22 in the fourth quarter.
 
The Warhawks open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday at UW-Stevens Point. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
