Six University of Wisconsin-Whitewater teams are represented in national rankings this week. This week's edition of Warhawks in the Rankings is presented by Whitewater Family Dentistry.
 
Men's Cross Country
 
The Warhawks moved up three spots to No. 5 in the final 2021 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches' Poll, which was released Nov. 20.
 
UW-W is also first in the USTFCCCA's Division III North Region Rankings.
 
UW-Whitewater placed fifth at the NCAA Division III Championship last Saturday, matching the 2003 team for the program's highest-ever finish at the national meet. David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) claimed the third All-America honor of his career by placing sixth overall, and was joined on the All-America podium by Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), who finished 23rd, and Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion), who placed 26th.
 
Football
 
UW-Whitewater is third in the latest D3football.com Top 25 and also held at No. 3 in the most recent American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches' Poll. UW-W received one first-place vote from AFCA voters. Both polls were most recently released following the conclusion of the regular season.
 
The Warhawks (11-0 overall)) topped Greenville (Ill.) 69-7 in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs last Saturday at Perkins Stadium. UW-W scored 28 first-quarter points on the way to its highest scoring output in the postseason since 2009.
 
UW-Whitewater hosts DePauw (Ind.) this Saturday in a second-round game of the NCAA Playoffs. Kickoff at Perkins Stadium is slated for 12 p.m.
 
Volleyball
 
The Warhawks conclude the 2021 season 16th in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Women's Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll.
 
UW-Whitewater (27-3 overall) reached the second round of the national tournament (regional semifinal), where they were outlasted in five sets against No. 24 Otterbein (Ohio). Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) posted a team-high 18 kills in the match and was named to the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the regional rounds.
 
Bowling
 
The Warhawks are 21st in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Preseason Poll, the most recent rankings released for the 2021-22 season. UW-W is ranked fourth in the NTCA's Division II/III Preseason Poll.
 
UW-Whitewater finished second at last weekend's Warhawk Classic at Rock River Lanes in Fort Atkinson. UW-W finished with a 7-3 record at the tournament, and Sam Knab (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) and Caitlin Mertins (Racine, Wis./Park) garnered All-Tournament Team accolades following the conclusion of play.
 
The Warhawks play their next NCAA-sanctioned tournament Jan. 21-23 at the Northeast Classic in Deptford, N.J.
 
Women's Basketball
 
UW-Whitewater debuted at No. 4 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll and is ranked 18th in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25.
 
UW-W (5-0 overall) defeated a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) opponents on the road last week, topping Augustana 65-53 on Nov. 27 and besting Illinois Wesleyan 75-43 last Saturday. The team's game at Carroll scheduled for Tuesday was postponed to Jan. 1.
 
The Warhawks visit Loras, which is receiving votes in both national polls, on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa.
 
Wrestling
 
UW-Whitewater is tied for 13th in the first National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Coaches Rankings of the regular season. Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) are each ranked nationally by the NWCA, and Shinhoster and Cadin Koeppel (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) appear in D3wrestle.com's listing.
 
Shinhoster is ranked third at 184 pounds by D3wrestle.com and sixth by the NWCA. Burford, a 149-pounder, is eighth in the weight class in the NWCA's rankings, while Koeppel, a heavyweight, is ranked ninth by D3wrestle.com at 285 pounds.
 
Burford is listed in the "Contender" category in the D3wrestle.com rankings. Wrestlers listed in the "Honorable Mention" section include Alex Barbarise (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) at 125 pounds, Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) at 133, Tommy Hoy (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel Catholic) at 165, Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) at 174 and Chad Richards (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) at 197.
 
The Warhawks competed last Saturday at the CUW Open in Mequon. Shinhoster, Richards and Koeppel led UW-W with runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes.
 
UW-Whitewater heads east next Saturday, Dec. 4, for the MSOE Invite in Milwaukee and the Parkside Open in Kenosha.
