The No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team started a run of six true road games over the next three weeks Wednesday night with a 65-53 victory at Augustana in a non-conference contest in Rock Island, Ill.
The Warhawks (4-0 overall) forced 28 turnovers that led to 28 points on the other end and held a 36-24 advantage on points in the paint.
Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) recorded a career-high 27 points to lead all scorers. The forward added a career-best seven steals and shot 12-of-18 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) collected 14 points, six rebounds and three steals, while
Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) finished with 10 points (9 in the first half), six rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks.
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) tallied five points, four rebounds, six assists and two blocks.
UW-Whitewater overcame a slow start offensively, overcoming 4-of-16 shooting from the floor by converting six free throws for a 15-10 advantage through one quarter. The Vikings (3-1) led by a 4-0 score through 90 seconds of action, but never led again in the game after the midway point of the period.
Grundahl gave the Warhawks a 20-13 lead with 8:35 to play in the second, and Trautsch expanded the advantage to nine with a 3-pointer at the 6:20 mark. Augustana got as close as three, but
Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) scored four points over the final minute-plus of the quarter to extend the UW-W lead to 38-27 by halftime.
UW-Whitewater's lead ballooned to 18 three minutes into the third quarter on buckets by Trautsch around a 3-pointer by Grundahl. The Vikings close to within 49-36, but UW-W held Augustana scoreless over the final 3:23 of the quarter and led 53-36 entering the fourth.
The Warhawks held their double-digit lead the rest of the way despite 50 percent shooting by the Vikings in the final quarter.
