The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team held a lead in the fourth quarter Wednesday night before an offensive outburst by Division I Green Bay erased the lead in a 63-41 loss in an exhibition game at the Kress Center in Green Bay, Wis.
The Warhawks entered the fourth quarter with a 37-27 advantage after outscoring the Phoenix 11-4 in the third quarter.
After
Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) gave UW-W a 41-30 advantage, Green Bay scored the next 33 points to emerge with the victory.
A total of 21 players played two minutes or more for the Warhawks, and 19 different players saw time in the fourth quarter.
Schumacher and
Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) posted 11 points apiece to lead UW-Whitewater. Kieres shot 5-of-6 from the field and added five rebounds and two assists.
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) grabbed a team-best six rebounds, and
Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) tallied six points, two assists and a team-high four steals.
Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) added five points, four rebounds and two steals.
UW-W scored the last nine points of the first quarter, including 3-pointers by Schumacher and Carollo, a layup by
Hailey Voelker (Colby, Wis./Colby) and a free throw by Kieres, for a 19-11 lead through 10 minutes of action.
The Phoenix drew to within four points at the 3:17 mark of the second, and after the third 3-pointer by Schumacher of the half, Green Bay scored the final four points to pull within 26-23 by halftime.
The Warhawks' lead waned to one point early in the third quarter, but the team held the Phoenix scoreless for the next four-plus minutes and took a 33-25 advantage on a 3-pointer by Carollo just past the midway point of the period.
Taylor scored the final four points of the quarter for UW-Whitewater, which held a 10-point lead entering the fourth.
The Warhawks led for more than 30 minutes in the game and forced 17 turnovers.
UW-Whitewater begins the regular season Nov. 9 with a home game against Calvin (Mich.). Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.
