Gymnastics Claims Title at Harley Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team saved its best performance for last Friday night to defeat UW-Oshkosh and Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in a tri-meet at the annual Midwest Twisters Harley-Davidson Invitational at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee.
 
The Warhawks passed UW-Oshkosh on the final rotation to score a season-high 188.925. The Titans finished second with a 187.825, and Gustavus Adolphus was third with a 179.150.
 
Junior Blaise Wilson (Thornton, Colo./Legacy) highlighted the night by winning the all-around competition with a career-best 38.350, the 20th-highest score in program history. Freshman Faith Mylin (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian Academy) was third, tying her top score of the season with a 36.725.
 
UW-Whitewater donned pink leos for breast cancer awareness and research. Funds were collected for scores of 9.500 or above and will be donated to the cause.
 
Senior Lauren Marshall (Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) and Wilson led the Warhawks on vault, where the team scored a 47.575. Marshall recorded a 9.700 to place third, and Wilson contributed a personal record score of 9.600, good for fourth. Sophomore Emily North (Oklahoma City, Okla./Moore), Mylin and freshman Meg McGinley (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) also cracked the top 10. North finished eighth with a 9.450, and Mylin and McGinley tied for ninth with matching 9.425s.
 
UW-Whitewater continued the meet on uneven bars with a season-best 46.050. Senior Acacia Fossum (Gladstone, N.D./Richardton-Taylor) paced the team and finished as runner-up with a 9.550, and Wilson placed fourth with a 9.525. North scored a 9.175 to place sixth, freshman Taiya Stelmachowski (Plainfield, Ill./Central) registered an 8.925 to finish eighth and Mylin tied for ninth with her 8.875.
 
The Warhawks tied the program's No. 16 score on balance beam with a 47.625. North recorded a career-best 9.800, the third-highest mark in program history, to win the event. Freshman Karina Sabol (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) scored a season-high 9.700 to tie for third place, and Wilson registered a personal record 9.625 to place seventh. Marshall finished 10th with a 9.425, and Fossum collected a 9.075 to place 12th overall.
 
UW-Whitewater tallied its highest score of the night on floor exercise with a 47.675 and took five of the top seven spots. Sabol led the field with a 9.725, and Wilson was second with a 9.600. Fossum placed fourth with a season-high 9.550, and Mylin completed her night with a 9.425, good for sixth. Junior Vanessa Olinger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) finished seventh with a 9.375.
 
The Warhawks head to USAF Academy, Colo., next Saturday, Feb. 15, to take on Division I Air Force and California-Davis. The tri meet begins at 3 p.m. Central Time.
