Women’s Hoops This Week: February 3-9, 2020

The No. 6 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team will play four of its final six games of the regular season on the road starting this week as it looks to maintain its lead in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.
 
The team's three-week stretch begins this Wednesday as it visits UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m., and continues Saturday as it hosts UW-River Falls on Senior Day at Kachel Gymnasium. UW-Whitewater will recognize seniors Megan Corcoran (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) and Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) at halftime of the contest.

The Warhawks improved to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in the WIAC with a 73-47 triumph over then-No. 20 UW-La Crosse last Wednesday. UW-W shot 45.9 percent from the floor and finished with a 44-18 advantage on points in the paint, and held the Eagles to 29.3 percent shooting on the other end.

UW-Whitewater remained at No. 6 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 for the third straight week, earning 472 points from voters. The team is at No. 9 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Coaches Poll, which was announced last week.
 
Wednesday – at UW-Stevens Point, 7 p.m.
 
The Warhawks and Pointers will meet for the second time this season on Wednesday in Stevens Point. UW-W out-scored UW-SP 18-7 in the second quarter and 22-7 in the fourth on Jan. 8 in a 67-49 victory at Kachel Gymnasium. Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) registered a game-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and three blocks as the team forced 20 turnovers and recorded 42 points in the paint.
 
UW-Stevens Point (9-10 overall, 4-4 WIAC) has won its last two games, including a 62-45 victory at UW-River Falls last Wednesday. Taylor Greenheck posted 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Kellan Schmidt added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Pointers, who shot 51.1 percent from the floor.
 
Bailee Collins (11.3 points per game), Amber Baehman (11.2 ppg) and Greenheck (10.7 ppg) all average double figures in scoring for UW-Stevens Point, which ranks second in the league in both free-throw percentage (73.4) and 3-point field goal percentage (32.6).
 
The Pointers lead the all-time series against the Warhawks, 46-40, but UW-Whitewater has claimed the last five games between the two teams.
 
Saturday – vs. UW-River Falls, 3 p.m. (Senior Day)
 
UW-Whitewater forced 22 turnovers that led to 27 points off those miscues and held UW-River Falls scoreless for more than 15 minutes starting in the second quarter until the 9:42 mark of the fourth quarter in a 73-41 win on Jan. 11 in River Falls. Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) paced the Warhawks with 14 points.
 
The Falcons (5-14, 0-8) defeated Mount Mary 83-68 in a non-conference game played on Jan. 31 in River Falls. Brianna Koop tallied 22 points, 14 rebounds and four steals for UW-RF, which outscored the Blue Angels 27-16 in the second quarter.
 
Koop leads UW-River Falls in scoring at 12.1 points per game. Sydney Hein averages two made 3-pointers per game, which is tied for first in the league.
 
UW-Whitewater owns a 56-28 advantage in the all-time series, including a 34-8 mark in games played at home.
 
UW-River Falls hosts UW-Stout Wednesday before making the trip to Whitewater Saturday.
