The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team started strong and finished with its top event score of the day Saturday in a 192.125-191.975 win over UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet at Russell Arena.
The Warhawks' team score tied the No. 7 mark in program history and tied its season high on floor exercise to finish off the victory.
UW-Whitewater recognized seniors
Acacia Fossum (Gladstone, N.D./Richardton-Taylor),
Lauren Marshall (Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) and
Jessi Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn./Central) immediately following the conclusion of the meet. The three have combined for four All-America honors and three all-conference medals, and have been on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll a combined seven times. They helped lead the team to national championships in 2017 and 2018.
Marshall recorded a personal-record 9.825 on vault, good for the third-best score in program history, to win the event and lead the Warhawks to a team score of 48.175, which is tied for the fourth-highest in program history. Junior
Blaise Wilson (Thornton, Colo./Legacy) matched her career best with a 9.650 to place second, and sophomore
Rachel Lewellen (Ripley, Miss./Ripley) scored a 9.600, good for sixth place. Sophomore
Emily North (Oklahoma City, Okla./Moore) and freshman
Faith Mylin (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian Academy) tied for eighth with matching 9.550s, good for Mylin's personal record and a career-best tying mark for North.
UW-Whitewater tied its 16th-best score in the school record book on uneven bars with a 47.775, the team's best performance of the season in the event. Rondeau tallied a career-best 9.625, good for third place, and Wilson tied for fourth with a 9.600. Fossum finished sixth with a 9.550, and North and freshman Tayia Stelmachowski each posted a 9.500 to tie for seventh and tie Stelmachowski's personal record.
The Warhawks continued their high scoring on balance beam with a 47.775, which is tied for the No. 10 score in the program record book. Wilson collected a 9.725, good for second place, North finished fourth with a 9.650 and freshman
Karina Sabol (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) tied for fifth with a 9.575. Junior
Vanessa Olinger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) placed eighth with a season-best 9.450, and Marshall finished 10th with a 9.375.
Sabol and Mylin each set personal records with their 9.800s to tie for second and lead UW-Whitewater to a 48.400, which tied a season high in addition to breaking into the top 10 of the team record book. Fossum registered a season-high 9.700 to finish fourth, and North placed sixth with a career-best 9.600. Olinger and Wilson tied for ninth with matching scores of 9.500.
Wilson tied for first in the all-around competition with a 38.475, her second-highest score of the season and tied for the 11th-best performance in program history. North finished third with a 38.300, tied for the No. 20 score in program history.
The Warhawks head to UW-Eau Claire next Saturday, March 7, for the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional at 4 p.m.
