The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team finished its 2019-20 season Saturday afternoon with an 84-82 loss against UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Kachel Gymnasium.

Junior forward Equan Ards (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) posted a program-record 49 points, breaking Melvin Brown Jr.'s (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent) record of 47 from January 23, 2019. Ards shot 21-of-38 from the floor and added nine rebounds, and tallied 28 points in the first half alone.

The Warhawks (7-18 overall, 2-12 WIAC) forced 16 turnovers, including 12 in the first half, and held an 18-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Blue Devils (6-19, 2-12) out-scored UW-Whitewater 19-12 at the free-throw line.

Freshman forward Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) tallied eight points, and freshman guard Austin Gates (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) recorded seven points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Prior to playing their final game in a Warhawk uniform, seniors James Fox (Janesville, Wis./Edgerton), Riley Jensen (Milton, Wis./Janesville Craig) and Ricky Spicer Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran) were recognized in a ceremony with head coach Pat Miller and interim athletic director Ryan Callahan. Spicer posted five points and two assists, and Jensen collected five points and eight rebounds.

The two teams were tied on five different occasions over the first 13 minutes of action before the Warhawks took control over the final 7:30 of the period. UW-W led by as many as seven over that span, including a 41-34 margin with 2:24 on the clock after a highlight-reel, tip-in dunk by Ards.

UW-Whitewater held a four-point lead at halftime and extended its advantage to seven early in the second half. The team led 62-54 with 13:50 remaining after a free throw by Gates.

The Warhawks took their largest lead of the game at 70-61 with 11:03 left after a dunk by Ards.

The Blue Devils chipped away at the UW-W advantage, eventually taking the lead at 77-76 with 3:07 to go. Chislom scored four straight points to put the Warhawks back ahead at 80-77 with 2:11 on the clock.

UW-Stout scored the next four points for an 81-80 lead before Ards hit his record-breaking jumper with 26 seconds to play to put UW-Whitewater back in front.

The Blue Devils hit 3-of-4 from the free-throw line over the final 16 seconds, and the Warhawks had to go the length of the floor with four seconds to play and were unable to get a final shot off.
