Men’s Hoops This Week: Senior Day Headlines Final Week

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team concludes the 2019-20 season this week with a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games.
 
The Warhawks (7-16 overall, 2-10 WIAC) visit UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at 7 p.m. before hosting UW-Stout for Senior Day Saturday at 3 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.

UW-Whitewater will celebrate the careers of seniors James Fox (Janesville, Wis./Edgerton), Riley Jensen (Milton, Wis./Janesville Craig) and Ricky Spicer Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran) during a brief ceremony prior to tip-off.
 
Last week, the Warhawks dropped a pair of one-possession home games, falling 70-68 last Wednesday against eighth-ranked UW-Platteville and 49-47 Saturday against UW-Eau Claire.
 
On Wednesday, UW-Whitewater led by as many as 14 points in the first half and held the lead until the 7:54 mark of the second half, and was outlasted in a game that went down to the final possession. Equan Ards (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) registered 15 points, Breontae Hunt (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) totaled 14 points and eight rebounds, and Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) collected 11 points.
 
On Saturday, the Warhawks held the Blugolds to 33.3 percent shooting, but were unable to find an offensive rhythm in another contest that was decided in the final minute. Hunt tallied 11 points and nine rebounds, and Chislom recorded 10 points and five rebounds.
 
Wednesday – at UW-Oshkosh, 7 p.m., Oshkosh, Wis.
 
UW-Oshkosh (15-8, 9-3), which trails first-place UW-Platteville by one game in the WIAC standings, begins the week with three straight victories, including an 84-60 triumph over UW-Stout on Saturday. Adam Fravert and Jack Flynn posted 15 points apiece to lead the Titans, who shot 55.2 percent from the floor and committed only seven turnovers in the contest.
 
The Titans lead the WIAC in scoring offense, averaging 82.7 points per game while holding opponents to 73.9 points per outing, good for sixth. Fravert leads the team and ranks third in the conference with 18.9 points per game, and is the league's No. 1 rebounder (8.4 per game). Flynn also averages double figures in scoring at 15.2 points per affair.
 
The most recent game between UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh went down to the wire. David Vlotho hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with eight seconds left to give the Titans a 73-71 win. Ards finished with 24 points, and Bailey Kale (La Crosse, Wis./Central) recorded 14 points and three steals to lead the Warhawks, who shot 49.2 percent from the floor.
 
The Titans lead the all-time series between the two teams, 99-94.
 
Saturday – vs. UW-Stout, 3 p.m., Kachel Gymnasium (Senior Day)
 
UW-Stout (5-18, 1-11) has lost 10 straight games entering the week, including an 84-60 setback at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. TYreese Alexander posted a game-high 20 points to lead UW-S, which was limited to 41.1 percent shooting from the floor.
 
The Blue Devils rank fifth in the league in scoring offense, averaging 73.9 points per game. They lead the league in offensive rebounding with 13.26 per game. Jon Ciriacks ranks fifth in the conference in scoring with 16.0 points per outing. Alexander is shooting 54.2 percent from the floor, good for fourth in the league.
 
On January 18 in Menomonie, UW-Whitewater hung on for a 73-72 victory despite a rally in the final minute by UW-Stout. Ards registered a game-high 29 points to go with seven rebounds, and James Burks (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside University HS) chipped in with 17 points and five rebounds off the bench. The Warhawks shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the game, their second-highest mark of the season, and held the Blue Devils to 40.8 percent.
 
UW-Whitewater holds an 84-43 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams.
 
UW-Stout hosts UW-Stevens Point Wednesday before making the trip to Whitewater on Saturday.
