Play4Kay Highlights Final Week of Regular Season for Women’s Hoops

The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team wraps up the regular season this week with its annual Play4Kay game against UW-Oshkosh and a trip to Menomonie, Wis., to take on UW-Stout.
 
Wednesday's game against UW-Oshkosh tips off at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium. With a win, the Warhawks (21-2 overall, 11-1 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) would clinch the conference regular season title outright and avenge their only loss of the league slate.
 
A 50/50 raffle will be held in conjunction with Wednesday's game to raise funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for women's cancer. Play4Kay is a national initiative aimed at raising funds for cancer awareness and research. Proceeds from Wednesday's game will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. UW Credit Union will match all proceeds raised.
 
Wednesday's game can be watched live on UWW-TV via channel 100.1 on campus, Spectrum channel 989 for subscribers in the Whitewater area and online.
 
UW-Whitewater will close the regular season Saturday at UW-Stout starting at 3 p.m.

The Warhawks sealed at least a share of the ninth conference title in program history last week with a pair of road wins, defeating UW-Platteville 59-55 on Wednesday before topping UW-Eau Claire 57-39 on Saturday.
 
On Wednesday, UW-Whitewater out-scored UW-Platteville 16-7 at the free-throw line and 14-2 on the fast break. Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and nine blocks, tied for the third-most in one game in program history, and hit three free throws in the final four seconds of regulation. Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) tallied 19 points, and Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) registered 12 points and five rebounds.
 
Three days later, the Warhawks held UW-Eau Claire to 25.5 percent shooting from the floor, including 2-of-16 from 3-point range, and outscored the Blugolds 20-10 in the third quarter. Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) totaled 17 points and nine rebounds, and Raeder posted 15 points.
 
UW-Whitewater also clinched the No. 1 seed in the WIAC Tournament, which begins next week. The team will host a semifinal game on Thursday, Feb. 27, against the lowest remaining seed following Tuesday's first-round games.
 
Wednesday – vs. UW-Oshkosh, 7 p.m., Kachel Gymnasium (Play4Kay)
 
UW-Oshkosh (14-9 overall, 7-5 WIAC) enters the week on a three-game winning streak, including a 54-36 triumph at UW-Stout on Saturday. Karsyn Rueth registered 16 points and five rebounds to lead the Titans, who held the Blue Devils to 28.8 percent shooting from the floor and pulled away with a 22-7 advantage in the third quarter.
 
On January 25, UW-Oshkosh finished with a 21-2 advantage on made free throws and UW-Whitewater was limited to 37.9 percent shooting from the field in a 62-51 loss in Oshkosh. Grundahl collected 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, and Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) totaled 10 points and three steals.
 
The Titans rank fourth in the WIAC in scoring offense (66.8 points per game) and third in scoring defense (58.1 ppg), and average only 12.0 turnovers per game offensively, best in the league. Leah Porath leads the WIAC in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per contest, and is the conference's leader in 3-point field goal percentage (43.1) and 3-pointers made (44).
 
UW-Oshkosh leads the all-time series against UW-Whitewater, 59-43. The Warhawks hold a 24-18 advantage under head coach Keri Carollo.
 
Saturday – at UW-Stout, 3 p.m., Menomonie, Wis.
 
UW-Stout (14-9, 5-7) suffered a pair of losses last week, including a 54-36 setback at home against UW-Oshkosh. Amber Fabeck paced the team with eight points and seven rebounds, and Shannan Watkins finished with six points, nine rebounds and three steals.
 
On January 18 in Whitewater, the Warhawks shot 48.3 percent from the floor, including a 56.0 percent clip in the second half, to pull away for a 72-56 victory over the Blue Devils. Grundahl contributed a game-high 17 points, Raeder tallied 16 points and Kieres added 12 points and nine rebounds.
 
UW-Stout enters the week as the conference's No. 1 scoring offense, averaging 69.0 points per contest. It also leads the league in rebounding margin (plus-6.3 per game), offensive rebounds (15.61 per game) and assists (14.26 per game). Fabeck leads UW-Stout in scoring with 12.7 points per game, and Watkins is second at 11.0 per outing.
 
The Blue Devils visit UW-Stevens Point Wednesday before hosting UW-Whitewater on Saturday.
 
The Warhawks lead the all-time series between the two teams, 49-30.
