Big Fourth Quarter Pushes Women's Hoops to Home Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team extended their winning streak to ten with a 67-49 win over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday night.

The No. 10 ranked Warhawks move to 12-1 while the Pointers drop to 6-7 in their respective seasons.

UWSP controlled the middle minutes of the first quarter. A jumper started a seven-point run in the seventh minute with a three-pointer wrapping up the made shots.

UWW immediately answered back when Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) made a three-pointer on the next play. They scored the next eight points unanswered to put them ahead 13-11. The Pointers scored a last second layup to tie up the score heading into the second quarter.

Both teams' offenses went shot-for-shot in the majority of the second, as neither found more than a four-point advantage. The Warhawks took control of the last three minutes, scoring ten points and holding the Pointers to just seven in the entire quarter. They entered the half with a 31-20 lead.

UW-Stevens Point bounced back from their 11-point disadvantage, scoring 22 points in the third, which would be their highest scoring of the game. They put 11 points on the board in the first five minutes.

The Pointers got as close as two points, but UWW held them off for the last few minutes to enter the fourth with a 45-42 advantage.

The Warhawks controlled the fourth quarter, putting up 22 points. Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) led the charge, scoring five points and contributing to the seven-point swing in the first three minutes. The team scored another seven unanswered points in the following three minutes to put them up 59-46.

A good layup from the Pointers was answered back with eight points from Kieres, Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) and Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) to end the game with a 67-49 win.

Taylor led the team with a season-high 18 points followed by Kieres and Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls), who each found 11 points. Raeder also grabbed a season-high eight rebounds to wrap up the game.

UW-Whitewater will be back in action at UW-River Falls on Saturday at 3 p.m.
