Women’s Hoops This Week – January 6-12, 2020

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team looks to continue momentum this week as it enters the second half of the regular season slate with a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games.
 
The Warhawks (11-1 overall, 1-0 WIAC), who enter the week on a nine-game winning streak, host UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at 7 p.m. for Whitewater Community Night at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
UW-Whitewater hits the road Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest at UW-River Falls.

Last week, the Warhawks finished the non-conference slate with a big win and opened WIAC play with a double-digit victory. On Dec. 30, the team forced 23 turnovers and finished with a 19-6 advantage on made free throws to close the two-day JustAGame Fieldhouse Holiday Shootout with a 75-69 triumph over then-No. 17 St. Thomas (Minn.). Senior guard Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) hit 10-of-12 at the free-throw line on her way to a season-high 21 points, and junior forward Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
 
UW-Whitewater held UW-Eau Claire to 28.6 percent shooting and held a 47-27 scoring advantage in the second and third quarters combined on its way to a 67-41 win. Sophomore guard Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) led a balanced Warhawk attack with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) tallied 11 points, four rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

The Warhawks entered the top 10 in both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll and the D3hoops.com Top 25.
 
UW-Whitewater is eighth in the WBCA ranking and 10th in the D3hoops.com poll. It's the program's first spot in the top 10 since the 2015-16 season.
 
Wednesday – vs. UW-Stevens Point, 7 p.m. (Whitewater Community Night)
 
UW-Stevens Point owns a 46-39 edge in the all-time series, but UW-Whitewater has claimed the last four meetings between the two teams, including a 70-58 triumph to close the season sweep on Feb. 6, 2019, in Stevens Point. The Warhawks shot 47.2 percent in the contest, including a 50 percent clip in the second half.
 
The Pointers (6-6 overall, 1-0 WIAC) opened conference play Saturday with a 65-57 victory over UW-River Falls. Taylor Greenheck recorded a game-high 24 points and added eight rebounds to lead UW-Stevens Point, which held the Falcons to 29 percent shooting from the floor. Amber Baehman added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
 
UW-Stevens Point ranks seventh in the league in both scoring offense (64.4 ppg) and scoring defense (63.2) entering Wednesday night's game.
 
Saturday – at UW-River Falls, 3 p.m.
 
UW-Whitewater leads the all-time series 55-28 against UW-River Falls, but the two teams have split the 40 games played in River Falls. The two teams split a pair of meetings last season, with the Warhawks falling 59-52 in the 2018-19 regular season finale on Feb. 16, 2019, in River Falls. Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) posted nine points and six rebounds to lead UW-W, which was limited to 33.9 percent shooting.
 
The Falcons (4-7, 0-1) rank fifth in the conference in scoring offense (68.2 ppg) and eighth in scoring defense (69.9 ppg). They lead the league with 28.91 defensive rebounds per contest.
 
UW-River Falls was defeated 65-57 at UW-Stevens Point to open the WIAC slate last Saturday. Jenna Zeman and Crystal Pearson registered 11 points apiece to lead the Falcons, who were limited to 29 percent shooting from the floor, including a 10.3 percent clip (3-of-29) from 3-point range.
 
UW-River Falls hosts nationally-ranked UW-La Crosse Wednesday before welcoming UW-Whitewater to Page Arena on Saturday.
