Women’s Hoops This Week: January 20-26, 2020

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team looks to maintain its first-place standing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as the first half of the conference season comes to a close this week.
 
The Warhawks (15-1 overall, 5-0 WIAC) host UW-Platteville Wednesday at 7 p.m. before visiting UW-Oshkosh Saturday at 3 p.m.
 
Wednesday's game will air live on UWW-TV on channel 100.1 on campus, Spectrum channel 989 for customers in the Whitewater area and online.
 
Saturday's game can be heard live on KOOL 106.5 FM WKCH in the Whitewater area and online at 940wfaw.com.

UW-Whitewater extended its active win streak to 13 games, the seventh-longest current streak in NCAA Division III, with two more WIAC victories.
 
On Wednesday, the Warhawks outscored then-No. 18 UW-La Crosse 20-10 in the second quarter and hit 9-of-12 from the free-throw line in the second half to help preserve a 66-52 triumph. Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) recorded her second double-double of the year with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) collected 14 points and four assists.
 
UW-Whitewater broke open a close game Saturday with a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter and never looked back in a 72-56 victory over UW-Stout at Kachel Gymnasium. Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) registered a game-high 17 points, and Raeder added 16 points, five assists and two steals.

The Warhawks held steady at sixth in both the D3hoops.com Top 25 and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Coaches Poll.
 
Wednesday – vs. UW-Platteville, 7 p.m. (Staff Appreciation Night)
 
The Warhawks have won eight straight games against UW-Platteville entering Wednesday's contest and own a 67-25 advantage in the all-time series. UW-W posted a 63-52 win back on Feb. 13, 2019, in Platteville. Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) and Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) totaled 18 points apiece to lead the team, which shot 46.9 percent from the floor.
 
Since an 8-3 start that included impressive non-conference wins over Chicago and Wartburg, the Pioneers (9-7, 1-4) have lost four of their last five games. UW-P split two games last week, defeating UW-Stevens Point 65-62 on the road before falling 53-48 on Saturday against UW-La Crosse. Maiah Domask tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pioneers, who were limited to 29.5 percent shooting from the field.
 
UW-Platteville enters the week ranked fifth in the league in scoring offense with 63.6 points per game while allowing 57.7 points per contest defensively, good for third. Domask (16.1 ppg) and Morgan Horstman (14.5 ppg) rank second and fourth in the WIAC, respectively, in scoring.
 
Saturday – at UW-Oshkosh, 3 p.m.
 
UW-Oshkosh holds a 58-43 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams, but UW-Whitewater claimed two of the three meetings last season, including both in the regular season. The Warhawks were defeated 69-40 in the most recent match-up on Feb. 24, 2019, in the WIAC Tournament title game in Oshkosh. Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) paced the team with 11 points.
 
The Titans (9-7, 2-3) rank third in the league in scoring offense (67.4 points per game) and fourth in scoring defense (57.8 ppg). They lead the WIAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.19-to-1).
 
UW-Oshkosh finished 1-1 in two games last week, falling 62-60 at home against UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday before defeating UW-River Falls 64-47 to close the week Saturday. Leah Porath, the conference's leading scorer and No. 3 rebounder, finished with 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Titans, who held the Falcons to 33.9 percent shooting defensively and committed only five turnovers offensively.
 
Before hosting UW-Whitewater Saturday, UW-Oshkosh visits UW-Stevens Point Wednesday.
