No. 6 Women's Basketball Wins on the Road

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team defeated UW-La Crosse 66-52 on Wednesday night, extending their winning streak to 12 games.

The No. 6 Warhawks improve to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Eagles dip to 11-4 and 2-2.

UW-L controlled the first five minutes of the game, never letting UW-W take the lead until the 4:04 mark when Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) found a gap on the inside to make a layup. Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) found two layups from fastbreaks and Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) made both of her free throws to put the Warhawks up 17-13 heading into the second quarter.

Taylor put the first points on the board followed by a three-pointer from Sto. Domingo. With five minutes remaining until half, the Warhawks did not let the Eagles within seven points of their lead. They outscored UW-L 20-10 throughout the quarter to enter halftime with a 37-23 lead.

The Warhawks had a slow start to the third as they only recorded two points in the first six minutes of play. But they were able to find eight points in the remaining time to hold a 10-point lead.

UW-W continued to hold their lead throughout the fourth, as layups from Taylor, Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) continued the team's offensive momentum from late in the third quarter.

In the final two and a half minutes, the Warhawks received five chances at the free throw line from UW-L fouls. Sto. Domingo, Taylor and Raeder shot 90 percent from the line for a 66-52 win.

Raeder and Taylor each registered 14 points to lead the offensive drive. Taylor also recorded a team-high 10 rebounds, followed by Grundahl and Belschner who each grabbed eight. Schumacher recorded two season-highs with three blocks and five assists.

UW-Whitewater will be back in action at Kachel Gymnasium on Saturday against UW-Stout for Alumni Day. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
