The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis squad hosted California-Santa Cruz at Wangerin Courts Saturday afternoon.
 
The no. 38 Warhawks (10-5) took down the visiting Slugs (3-10) by a 5-3 count. 
 
The Warhawks started off strong, sweeping UC-Santa Clara in the doubles sets.  Senior Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) and freshman Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) dominated in the second slot with an 8-3 victory.  Senior Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) and freshman Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) claimed the first slot in an intense 8-6 (5) affair to earn the third point heading into singles.
 
Gray continued his strong play into singles, notching the first Warhawks point in the fourth slot 6-3, 6-1.  The Warhawks dropped the next three points, before Mitchell clinched the match in the fifth slot with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory. Junior Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South) had split the first two sets of his match at No. 6, but the match was left unfinished after dual decision had been reached.
 
The Warhawks will wrap up their weekend tomorrow at 3 p.m. against regional rival Coe (Iowa) at Wangerin Courts.
