The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team tallied its second straight doubleheader sweep on the road against a regionally-ranked team Thursday afternoon with two victories at Carthage.
The Warhawks (22-10 overall) scored 10 early runs and hung on in the opener for a 10-6 triumph, then plated four runs in the top of the eighth for a 4-0, extra-inning victory in Game 2.
In the first game, UW-Whitewater totaled 11 hits and erupted for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The Lady Reds (22-10) scored six times in the bottom of the fifth to draw within four runs, but junior
Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) entered in relief and recorded the final six outs, collecting four strikeouts without allowing a baserunner.
Senior
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove), who had a no-hitter going through four frames, picked up her ninth win of the year, allowing three earned runs over five innings. She tallied five strikeouts and surrendered only three hits.
Sophomore right fielder
Kaiden Jackson (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) tripled twice, scored two runs and knocked in two more. Senior shortstop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) registered two hits and two RBI, and junior first baseman
Mattie Klingenmeyer (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) recorded a two-run single in the Warhawks' big fourth inning for her two RBI.
Senior left fielder
Kayla Seymour (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and senior infielder
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) scored two runs.
In the nightcap, neither team touched home plate until the eighth inning, when Seymour knocked in the go-ahead run on a base hit to left center. Jackson added an RBI single up the middle, and UW-Whitewater tacked on two runs on Carthage errors.
Junior
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) stymied the Lady Reds' offense in her fourth shutout of the season. She allowed only one hit and two walks while striking out nine over eight innings and improved to 11-2 on the year with the performance.
Seymour and Berglund combined for four of the Warhawks' five hits in the contest.
UW-Whitewater returns to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Friday at home against UW-La Crosse. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. at van Steenderen Softball Complex.
