The No. 17 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team competed in a pair of one-run games Wednesday, falling 3-2 against perennial power Luther (Iowa) before defeating No. 5 MIT by the same score later in the day at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
UW-Whitewater was initially scheduled to play Middlebury (Vt.) and Luther, but the Middlebury game was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Warhawks (6-4 overall) posted their second win of the week over the fifth-ranked Engineers as junior catcher
Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) mashed a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to give the team the lead for good.
Junior
Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) allowed only two runs (one earned) in a complete-game effort for her first win of the year. She scattered five hits and one walk while striking out five.
Senior shortstop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) tallied two hits and one run scored, and sophomore right fielder
Kaiden Jackson (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) posted one hit and one run scored. Senior centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) accounted for UW-Whitewater's other hit.
MIT (6-4) scored one run in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at first base, but Biesiada induced a lineout for the final out of the contest.
In the opener, Luther (12-3) scored two runs in the top of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and take the lead for good.
The Warhawks plated a run on an error in the seventh to draw within one with the go-ahead run at the plate, but were unable to tie the affair.
Senior
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) dropped to 2-3 with the loss, allowing only three runs over six innings while striking out seven. Biesiada tossed a scoreless seventh in relief.
Junior third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) drove in UW-Whitewater's other run in the fourth on a groundout.
The Warhawks close out their spring break trip Thursday against Colby (Maine) and Carleton (Minn.) at 10:45 a.m. Central Time and 1:15 p.m. Central Time, respectively.
