The No. 9 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team took advantage of strong pitching and timely hitting Sunday to post two wins on its third day at the National Training Center Spring Games at Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Fla.
The Warhawks (3-3 overall) downed Wellesley (Mass.) 7-1 in their opener before finishing the day with a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 3 St. Thomas (Minn.).
Against St. Thomas (8-1), senior centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) gave UW-Whitewater a walkoff win with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the seventh and back senior pitcher
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove), who tossed a five-hit shutout.
Camardo (1-2) allowed only one walk and struck out four batters in the performance. She stranded runners in each of the final three innings to set the stage for Catino's blast.
Senior designated player
Kayla Seymour (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West), sophomore right fielder
Kaiden Jackson (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and sophomore left fielder
Vera Pflugradt (Lake Zurich, Ill./Stevenson) each tallied one hit in the contest.
In the game against Wellesley (3-2), the Warhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on run-scoring ground balls from senior shortstop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and junior catcher
Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) and didn't look back.
Junior pitcher

UW-Whitewater plated four runs in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double by sophomore first baseman
Kaleigh O'Brien (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge), a two-run triple by Pflugradt and a run-scoring bunt by Jackson.
After Wellesley got on the board with a solo homer in the sixth, the Warhawks added an insurance run in the seventh on an error.
