The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team collected its highest score of the season for the second consecutive meet Saturday against UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet at Russell Arena.
The Warhawks' team score of 190.675 is the 19th-highest in program history. The team's 47.950 showing on balance beam ties the No. 6 mark in the school record book.
UW-Oshkosh registered a 191.850 to win the meet.
UW-Whitewater recognized seniors
Erika Briscoe (Solon, Iowa/Solon),
Lewa Evans (Milwaukee, WI/Whitefish Bay),
Bailey Fitzpatrick (Burlington, Wis./Burlington),
Abby Helmke (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and
Frankee Hutton-Lau (Shakopee, Minn./Main Street School of Performing Arts) following their final home meet. The 2014 national championship team was also honored on the fifth anniversary of its feat, which concluded a three-peat of NCGA titles for the program. The 2018 NCGA Scholastic All-Americans were also recognized.
Junior
Lauren Marshall (Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) finished first on vault with a season-best score of 9.700, her third straight meet with her highest score of the year, to help the Warhawks finish with a 47.700 on the apparatus. Briscoe matched her top score in 2019 with a 9.525, good for fourth place. Freshmen
Emily North (Oklahoma City, Okla./Moore) and
Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) collected matching scores of 9.500, good for a tie for fifth. The score was North's career high. Freshman
Rachel Lewellen (Ripley, Miss./Ripley) tallied a personal record with her 9.475, good for a tie for eighth place.
UW-Whitewater followed with another strong performance, earning a 47.425 on the uneven bars. Junior
Acacia Fossum (Gladstone, N.D./Richardton-Taylor) entered the top 25 in program history with a career-best score of 9.725 to win the event. Sophomore
Blaise Wilson (Thornton, Colo./Legacy) tied for third with a 9.625, and Fitzpatrick finished sixth with a season-high 9.500. Sophomore
Jessi Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn./Central) placed 10th with a 9.325, and Helmke collected a 9.250 to finish 11th.
North smashed her career high by one-half point to lead the Warhawks on beam, posting a 9.750, good for a tie for third place and tied for the sixth-best score in program history. Fossum and sophomore
Vanessa Olinger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) tied for fifth with scores of 9.650, a season high for Fossum and a personal record for Olinger. Helmke finished ninth with a 9.525, and Briscoe place 10th with a 9.375.
UW-Whitewater finished strong on floor exercise with a 47.600, its highest score since finishing with a 47.750 on Jan. 18. Briscoe led the team and tied for third with a 9.600. Fossum, Olinger, Evans and Hutton-Lau finished in places 6-7-8-9, respectively, in the event. Fossum registered a 9.550, Olinger tied a season high with a 9.525, Evans totaled 9.475 and Hutton-Lau contributed a 9.450.
The Warhawks begin the postseason next Saturday, March 9, at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional (Presented by Culver's). Events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at UW-Stout.
