The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit Friday night in a 72-56 loss at No. 22 Washington-St. Louis in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship at WU Field House.

The Warhawks (18-10 overall) were making their 11th appearance in the national tournament over the last 12 years and 18th overall. The team placed second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in both the regular season and conference tournament.

UW-Whitewater forced 21 turnovers defensively, but was held to 30.8 percent shooting on the other end, including a 28.1 percent clip in the first half, in the setback.

Junior guard Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) fell one point shy of her career high in scoring, finishing with a game-high 20 points and three steals. Senior forward Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) tallied 15 points, six rebounds and two steals, and freshman guard Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) registered nine points in 12 minutes off the bench.

After a slow start for both teams, the Bears (20-6) jumped out to a 13-2 advantage just over midway through the first quarter and didn't look back. The Warhawks cut the Wash U. lead down to eight on a layup by sophomore center Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) with 2:48 on the clock, but the Bears scored five of the last seven points to take a 20-9 lead through one.

Washington tallied the first nine points of the second quarter and led by as many as 23 before UW-Whitewater cut it down to 16 with a 7-0 run capped by a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South).

The Bears finished the half on a 5-0 run to take a 47-26 lead into the second half.

The Warhawks started the third quarter on a 14-3 run, drawing to within 52-40 at the 5:01 mark following a 3-pointer by Raeder. Wash U. built its advantage back up to 16 by the end of the period.

UW-Whitewater continued its push in the fourth, drawing within 10 on a layup by Raeder with 6:37 remaining. Freckmann cut it to 10 points again two minutes later, but the Bears closed the contest on an 8-2 run as the Warhawks converted only one basket the rest of the way, a layup by Kieres just before time expired.

Freckmann and fellow seniors Becky Deichl (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) and Juliette Vainisi (Prospect Heights, Ill./John Hersey) wrap up their careers after helping the Warhawks claim one WIAC regular season championship, two conference tournament titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances over the last four years.
