Warhawks Win Eighth Straight on Senior Day

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team continued its strong play and honored its four seniors Saturday afternoon during a 74-60 victory over UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
The Warhawks (16-7 overall, 9-3 WIAC) claimed their eighth straight win and remains one game behind first-place UW-Oshkosh in the WIAC standings.
 
UW-Whitewater shot 45.8 percent from the floor and held the Blue Devils (16-7, 6-6) to 33.3 percent from the floor. The Warhawks hit 11-of-14 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to maintain their advantage.
 
Sophomore guard Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) posted a team-high 17 points, and junior guard Camri Conley (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) tallied 14 points. Senior forward Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 11 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
 
Junior guard Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) finished with nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Junior guard Megan Corcoran (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) collected eight points, and junior forward Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) registered six rebounds and four blocks up front.
 
Freckmann was honored at halftime along with fellow seniors Becky Deichl (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) and Juliette Vainisi (Prospect Heights, Ill./John Hersey) during their final home regular season game. All four started the game, and all four scored and combined for 25 points.
 
 The Warhawks grabbed an 11-6 lead four minutes into the contest and opened up a 16-8 advantage two minutes later following a layup by Raeder.
 
UW-Stout scored the next seven points to cut the UW-W lead to one, but the Warhawks scored on their final three possessions of the quarter as Freckmann nailed a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to make it 23-19.
 
The Blue Devils drew to within two with 8:40 on the clock, but UW-Whitewater answered with an 8-0 run capped by a 3-point play by Conley at the 5:24 mark. The Warhawks took an 11-point lead two minutes later on a 3-pointer by Corcoran, but UW-Stout whittled its deficit down to six by halftime.
 
UW-Whitewater opened up an 11-point lead four minutes into the third on a layup by Deichl, and the team held at least a three possession lead for the remainder of the quarter and led 56-49 heading to the fourth.
 
The Blue Devils drew to within six with 9:22 to play, but Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) scored five straight points to push the lead back to double digits. From there, UW-Stout drew no closer than nine points as the Warhawks continued to convert at the free-throw line. Vainisi converted the final two free throws of the game.
 
UW-Whitewater begins the final week of the regular season Wednesday with a visit to UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
