Women's Basketball This Week - February 4-10, 2019

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team looks to extend its current six-game winning streak this week as it plays two more Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games.
 
The Warhawks (14-7 overall, 7-3 WIAC) visit UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at 7 p.m. before welcoming UW-Stout to Kachel Gymnasium Saturday for Senior Day at 3 p.m. At halftime Saturday, seniors Becky Deichl (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI), Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) and Juliette Vainisi (Prospect Heights, Ill./John Hersey) will be recognized as they play in their final regular season home game.
 
UW-Whitewater moved into a tie for second place with UW-La Crosse on Monday night with a thrilling 78-70 victory over No. 11 UW-Oshkosh at Kachel Gymnasium. Sophomore guard Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) posted a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and two steals to lead the team, which held the Titans to 3-of-13 shooting and hit 9-of-14 at the free-throw line in the extra period. Freckmann tallied 14 points, 13 rebounds and four assists to extend her double-double streak to five games.
 
Two days earlier, the Warhawks topped UW-Eau Claire 68-55 on Saturday in Whitewater. Freckmann posted 15 points, 16 rebounds and three assists and became the ninth player in program history to reach 600 career rebounds. Junior guard Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) added 14 points and seven rebounds as the team held the Blugolds to 35 percent shooting from the floor.
 
Wednesday – at UW-Stevens Point, 7 p.m. (Stevens Point, Wis.)
 
The Pointers (8-13, 4-6) have won three of their last four games entering the week, including a 63-60 triumph at UW-River Falls on Saturday. Amber Baehman posted 20 points and seven rebounds to lead UW-Stevens Point, which shot 46.4 percent from the floor and took the lead for good with 25 seconds to play on a go-ahead layup by Bailee Collins.
 
Baehman leads the Pointers and ranks fifth in the conference in scoring at 13.9 points per game. Collins (10.1 ppg) and Carly Cerrato (10.8 ppg) also average double figures in scoring. The team ranks seventh in the league in scoring offense (62.8 ppg) and eighth in scoring defense (67.6 ppg).
 
On Jan. 2, UW-Whitewater held UW-Stevens Point to 34.6 percent shooting and finished with a 46-20 advantage on points in the paint in a 67-55 home win. Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) collected 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, and Freckmann added 20 points and eight rebounds.
 
Saturday – vs. UW-Stout, 3 p.m. (Kachel Gymnasium)
 
UW-Stout (15-6, 5-5) has lost three of its last four games entering the week, including an 81-67 home defeat against UW-Oshkosh last Saturday. Bailey Diersen and Amber Fabeck collected 16 points apiece to lead the Blue Devils, who were outscored 18-7 in the second quarter and shot only 33.3 percent in the first half.
 
Diersen leads UW-Stout and ranks second in the league in scoring at 17.4 points per game, while Kyncaide Diedrich is second at 15.7 points per contest and a team-best 6.7 rebounds per affair. Fabeck shoots a team-high 50.2 percent and averages 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
 
In UW-Whitewater's first meeting against the Blue Devils, the Warhawks were held to 36.8 percent from the field and UW-Stout made 24-of-32 from the free-throw line as UW-W was defeated 78-68 on Jan. 9 in Menomonie. Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) totaled 17 points, and Freckmann added 10 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Blue Devils host UW-Eau Claire Wednesday before making their trip to Whitewater.
