The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team scored in the waning moments of double overtime to extend the game and converted a go-ahead bucket as the buzzer sounded in the fourth overtime Wednesday night in a wild 95-94 victory in a non-conference contest at Beloit.
Sophomore guard
Bailey Kale (La Crosse, Wis./Central) forged the 11th time of the game with a jumper from the elbow as the buzzer sounded in the second overtime to tie it at 76-76.
Kale tied the game again at 82-82 in the third overtime, and neither team scored in the final 1:48 of the period.
The Warhawks (4-5 overall) led 90-88 before the Buccaneers tallied the next four points for a 92-90 advantage with 40 seconds remaining.
A 3-pointer by Kale gave UW-Whitewater a one-point lead, but Beloit (2-6) regained the advantage on the ensuing possession with a pair of free throws.
On a side out-of-bounds play with less than two seconds to go, senior forward
Riley Jensen (Milton, Wis./Janesville Craig) caught the pass near the left wing and hit a contested, 18-foot jumper just as the buzzer sounded to give the Warhawks the win.
Kale registered 31 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals in 55 minutes of action. Junior forward
Equan Ards (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) posted 16 points and five rebounds, and Jensen collected 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Freshman forward
Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) shot 5-of-6 from the field on his way to a 12-point, six-rebound performance.
UW-Whitewater shot 50 percent in the overtime periods (16-of-32) and 43 percent for the game to overcome the Buccaneers' 26-7 advantage on made free throws. The Warhawks held an 18-8 edge in second-chance points.
The two teams traded the lead over the course of the first half, and Beloit held a 30-28 lead heading into halftime.
UW-Whitewater and Beloit flipped scores in the second half, with the Warhawks holding a slight 30-28 advantage in the period. Ards gave UW-Whitewater the lead on a jumper with 34 seconds to play, but the Buccaneers responded at the other end, and the game headed to overtime.
Beloit led by as many as four in the first overtime, but freshman guard
Brian Conaghan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one. After the Bucs split 1-of-2 free throws at the other end, Chislom tied the contest at 66-66 with 1:26 on the clock.
The score held over the final minute-plus of the first OT, and Beloit again led by as many as four in the second extra frame before Kale's jumper that pushed it to a third overtime.
The Warhawks head to Naples, Fla., on Dec. 29-30 to face Hamline (Minn.) and No. 20 Amherst (Mass.).
