Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Second Quarter Leads Women's Basketball to Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team recorded a 75-50 win over Augustana (Ill.) on Wednesday night at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks move to 3-1, while the Vikings dip to 1-4 in their respective seasons.

Augustana led the entire first quarter after scoring in the first minute. The Warhawk offense was off to a slow start, but began finding their shots in the final three minutes.

Sophomore Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) got the team moving, and freshman Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) and junior Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) wrapped up the quarter.

After trailing 17-12 in the first, UW-W tied the game within the first minute of the second quarter and never looked back, leading the rest of the game.

Junior Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) found her rhythm halfway through the second. She scored 11 points in a row leading into the final two minutes of the quarter. The Warhawks scored a total of 25 points, their highest scoring quarter of the game, to go into halftime with a 37-22 lead.

To start the second half, Whitewater held a 10-point run from four players until the final two minutes of the third quarter. In the second and third quarters combined, the defense held the Vikings to just 12 points.

The Warhawks led by no less than 23 points over the final 10 minutes of the game, despite it being Augustana's highest scoring quarter. Whitewater led by a game-high of 31 halfway through the last quarter after freshman Kenni Czarnecki (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) scored her two free throw attempts.

The team found that 31-point lead again with three minutes left to play after sophomore Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) stole the ball and was able to make a layup off of the fast break. UW-W would clinch the win with a final score of 75-50.

Senior Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) led the offense with 16 points while Schumacher was just behind with 14. Taylor, Belschner and freshman Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) each grabbed seven rebounds.

UW-Whitewater will be back in action at home on Saturday against Illinois Wesleyan for Parents Day. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
