MADISON, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team opened up its exhibition season Wednesday night against Division I Wisconsin in front of an announced crowd of 3,305 at the Kohl Center.
Playing the Badgers for the first time since 2011, the Warhawks were defeated 67-34 in their first competition against another team this season.
Sophomore guard
Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) led UW-Whitewater with nine points, six rebounds and two steals. Senior guard
Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) tallied seven points and three rebounds, and sophomore guard
Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) recorded six points, all in the fourth quarter.
Junior center
Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) and sophomore forward
Courtney Oomens (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger)Â grabbed five rebounds apiece for the Warhawks, who held Wisconsin to 40.4 percent shooting from the floor, including figures under 36 percent in three of the four quarters.
UW-Whitewater was held scoreless over the first nine-plus minutes before Raeder hit a jumper with 44 seconds to play in the first quarter.
The Warhawks registered 10 points in the second quarter, led by four from Kieres and a 3-pointer from Raeder, to trail 30-12 at halftime.
Three different players scored in the third quarter for UW-Whitewater, including three points each from Kieres and senior guard
Megan Corcoran (Madison, Wis./LaFollette).
The Warhawks finished the game strong, nearly outscoring the Badgers in the fourth quarter thanks to a personal 6-0 run by Sto. Domingo, who hit a 3-pointer and converted a 3-point play off an offensive rebound.
UW-Whitewater opens the 2019-20 regular season Nov. 12 at Calvin (Mich.). Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. Central Time.
