Women's Basketball Downed at UW-Eau Claire

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team continued Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon, falling 85-58 at UW-Eau Claire.
 
The Warhawks (8-5 overall, 1-1 WIAC) were held to 31.7 percent shooting in the contest, while the Blugolds shot 51.7 percent from the floor and made more free throws (23) than UW-Whitewater attempted (14).
 
Sophomore guard Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) recorded a team-best 16 points to go with three rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Megan Corcoran (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) pitched in with 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks and twos teals off the bench, and sophomore guard Adriana Green (Racine, Wis./Horlick) posted nine points, two rebounds and one block, also in a reserve role.
 
The Warhawks were stymied by cold shooting in the first half, hitting on 26.9 percent from the field despite an 8-for-8 performance at the free-throw line.
 
Neither team led by more than five in the first quarter until the Blugolds (11-2, 2-0) scored six straight points to take a 15-6 lead with 2:47 on the clock. Senior forward Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) hit six consecutive free throws to bring UW-Whitewater within five, but UW-Eau Claire scored on its final two possessions of the period to take a 21-12 lead.
 
The Blugolds took their first double-digit advantage of the contest 15 seconds into the second. Junior guard Megan Corcoran (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) brought the Warhawks to within seven on a 3-pointer with 6:49 remaining, but UW-Eau Claire quickly regained a 10-point lead and built it up to as many as 16 points.
 
The Blugolds hit a pair of free throws on their final possession of the half to make it 38-25.
 
UW-Eau Claire extended its lead to 23 points midway through the third quarter, but UW-Whitewater closed the period with a 16-2 run, punctuated by back-to-back 3-pointers by Corcoran and Schumacher, to draw within 55-46 heading to the fourth.
 
The Warhawks got as close as eight following a layup at the 8:44 mark by sophomore center Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East), but the Blugolds scored 26 of the game's final 33 points, including the last nine.
 
UW-Whitewater visits UW-Stout Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Menomonie, Wis.
