The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team looks to build on a pair of strong performances from last week as it enters the second half of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with two games this week.
The Warhawks (10-7 overall, 3-3 WIAC) host UW-Platteville Wednesday at 7 p.m. to conclude the first half of the conference slate, and begin the second half Saturday at No. 22 UW-La Crosse.
UW-Whitewater knocked off 12th-ranked UW-Oshkosh 49-47 on the road last Wednesday before concluding the week Saturday with a convincing 62-34 triumph over UW-River Falls.
The Warhawks held the Titans to 29.4 percent shooting from the floor, including a 3-for-19 performance from 3-point range, and shot 52.2 percent from the floor in the second half to preserve their fifth straight win over UW-Oshkosh. Junior guard
Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) tallied 15 points and four rebounds, while senior forward
Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) collected 10 points and five rebounds.
UW-Whitewater continued its strong defensive performance Saturday, holding UW-River Falls to 22.2 percent shooting from the floor and forcing 22 turnovers. Freckmann registered her third double-double in her last four games with 17 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals, and senior forward
Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) contributed 10 points.
Wednesday – vs. UW-Platteville, 7 p.m. (Kachel Gymnasium)
UW-Platteville (8-9, 2-4) split two games last week, falling 76-64 at UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday before posting a 75-62 victory at home over UW-Stevens Point. The team shot 50 percent from the floor and 17-of-22 (77.3 percent) from the free-throw line in the win.
Megan Hortsman and Maiah Domask each average double figures in scoring for the Pioneers. Hortsman enters the week with 12.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, while Domask averages a double-double with 12.8 points and a team-best 10.1 rebounds per affair.
UW-Whitewater leads the all-time series between the two teams, 65-25, and has won the last six meetings. The Warhawks swept the two games in 2018, besting the Pioneers 67-58 on Jan. 24, 2018, and posting a 77-42 triumph on Feb. 14, 2018. In the second game, UW-Whitewater forced 34 turnovers and held UW-Platteville to 32.5 percent shooting from the floor.
Saturday – at UW-La Crosse, 3 p.m. (La Crosse, Wis.)
The Eagles (15-2, 4-2) had their four-game winning streak snapped Saturday, falling 60-48 at home against UW-Oshkosh. The team was held to 28.8 percent shooting, including 5-of-21 from 3-point range.
Emma Gamoke paces UW-La Crosse in scoring with 12.7 points per game, and Dani Craig averages 11.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest with a team-high 42 assists entering the week.
The Eagles claimed the first meeting against UW-Whitewater on Jan. 12, outscoring the Warhawks 9-2 in the second quarter and 19-12 in the fourth quarter during a 60-49 win. Freckmann led UW-Whitewater with 11 points and a career high-tying 17 rebounds, and Schumacher added 10 points for the Warhawks, who committed 21 turnovers, second-most in one game this season.
UW-La Crosse visits UW-River Falls Wednesday before hosting UW-Whitewater Saturday.
