Women's Basketball This Week - January 14-20, 2019

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team continues Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this week starting Wednesday with a trip to 12th-ranked UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.

The Warhawks (8-7 overall, 1-3 WIAC) conclude the week Saturday by hosting UW-River Falls at 3 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.

UW-Whitewater dropped a pair of games last week. The team was bested 78-68 at UW-Stout last Wednesday. Sophomore guard Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) posted 17 points, and senior forward Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) registered a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Warhawks wrapped up the week Saturday on Alumni Day at Kachel Gymnasium, falling 60-49 against UW-La Crosse. Freckmann recorded another double-double with 11 points and a career high-tying 17 rebounds, tied for the 25th most in one game in program history. The team shot 51.9 percent in the second half to overcome a first-half deficit, but the Eagles ended the contest with a 9-1 run over the final three minutes.

UW-Oshkosh – Wednesday, 7 p.m. (Oshkosh, Wis.)

The Titans (14-1, 4-0), ranked 11th by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and 12th by D3hoops.com, enter the week on a five-game winning streak, including a 70-42 triumph at UW-River Falls on Saturday.

Eight UW-Oshkosh players average between 5-11 points per game, including Melanie Schneider, who paces the team with 10.1 points to go along with a team-best 4.9 rebounds per affair. Isabella Samuels is shooting 68.6 percent from the floor and averaging 8.1 points per contest.

The Titans own a 57-41 advantage in the all-time series against the Warhawks, but UW-Whitewater has claimed the last four meetings, including three last season. The Warhawks won the WIAC Tournament championship game over the Titans in a thrilling 68-65 contest. Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) and Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) recorded 12 points apiece to lead UW-Whitewater, which survived a last-second, game-tying shot attempt by UW-Oshkosh to win its second straight conference tournament title.

UW-River Falls – Saturday, 3 p.m. (Kachel Gymnasium)

UW-River Falls (7-8, 1-3) split a pair of home games last week, downing UW-Platteville 57-36 before falling 70-42 against UW-Oshkosh.

Taylor Paulsrud leads the Falcons with 10.9 points per game, and is followed closely by Jenna Zeman, who averages 9.6 points per contest and leads the team with 41 assists. Brianna Leahy (8.6 ppg) leads the team in rebounding (7.3 per game) and blocks (22).

UW-Whitewater leads the all-time series 54-27 against UW-River Falls. The two teams split two games last season, as the Falcons prevailed 51-48 on Jan. 6, 2018, in River Falls, and the Warhawks returned the favor with an 83-72 triumph on Feb. 10, 2018.

The Falcons visit UW-Stout Wednesday before heading to Whitewater Saturday.
