Day 1 Recap

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team posted several impressive results in singles play against scholarship competition Saturday on the second and final day of the fifth annual Warhawk Fall Invitational at Wangerin Courts.

Freshman Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead), junior Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South), senior Brett Conard (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) and sophomore Robert Rider (Annapolis, Md./South River) led the Warhawks with top three finishes. Wood placed third in the No. 3 singles draw, while Pietila finished as runner-up in the fourth flight after downing Grand Valley State (Mich.) and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) to reach the final.

Conard placed third at the fifth position, defeating freshman teammate Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) in the third-place match by a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (15-13) score. Rider claimed second place honors at No. 7 with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph in the semifinal before falling against Grand Valley State in the title match.

Freshman Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) finished 2-1 at No. 4 singles, winning the consolation final by a 6-1, 6-2 score over St. Francis (Ill.).

"I saw a lot of signs of a young team on the first day," UW-Whitewater coach Frank Barnes said. "We made some adjustments on Day 2, and you can tell the team is maturing quickly. I'm excited to see how they do at the ITA Regional."

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships take place Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn.
