The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team picked up one tie and one loss in a non-conference doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan on Monday in Bloomington, Ill.
The Warhawks (19-10-1 overall) were downed 4-0 in the first game, and the nightcap was called in a 2-2 tie after eight innings due to inclement weather.
In Game 2, UW-Whitewater out-hit the Titans (22-8-1) by a 10-4 margin, but left 13 runners on base in the contest.
The Warhawks held a 2-0 lead through 3 1/2 frames after junior shortstop
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) hit a run-scoring, infield hit in the second and registered an RBI base hit to right in the fourth.
Illinois Wesleyan responded with two in the bottom of the fourth to tie the contest, and the two teams left runners on in each of the last four innings without a run to show for it.
Berglund, junior centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and sophomore
Megan Schweitzer (Appleton, Wis./East) each collected two hits to lead the offense.
Sophomore
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) pitched all eight innings, allowing four hits and seven walks while striking out seven batters.
In the opener, UW-Whitewater was held to five hits and the Titans scored two runs in the first and never trailed in the affair.
Junior
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) took the tough-luck loss, dropping to 9-4 on the year after allowing only one earned run in five innings. Freshman
Sarah Hutchinson (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) tossed one scoreless inning in relief.
Catino finished with two hits to lead the offense, which was retired in order over the first three innings before leaving runners on in each of the last four frames.
The Warhawks return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play to close out the regular season this weekend on the road. The team visits UW-Eau Claire Saturday at 1 p.m. and UW-La Crosse Sunday at 1 p.m.
