The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team remained unbeaten in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Tuesday with a pair of one-run victories at UW-Platteville in a doubleheader.
The Warhawks (16-8 overall, 6-0 WIAC) edged the Pioneers 1-0 in the opener and scored three runs in their final at-bat of the second game to come away with a 4-3 triumph.
In Game 1, junior
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering seven hits over seven innings and striking out nine to improve to 7-2 on the year.
Freshman right fielder
Vera Pflugradt (Lake Zurich, Ill./Stevenson) provided all the offense UW-Whitewater needed. After leading off the top of the sixth with a walk, she moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a pop-up by senior left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) and scored from third on a second passed ball with two outs.
Camardo pitched around leadoff hits in both the sixth and seventh innings to complete her second shutout of the season. She also led the Warhawks offensively with two of the team's six hits.
UW-Platteville (13-11, 0-4) led 3-1 through six innings in the nightcap before UW-Whitewater rallied in the top of the seventh.
With one out, sophomore third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) singled to right field, and sophomore catcher
Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) doubled to left center to put runners at second and third. Junior
Molly Ethington (Rock Island, Ill./Alleman Catholic), who came on as a substitution at first base in the fifth inning, knocked a two-run double to right center to tie the contest at 3-3.
Two batters later, Ethington came around to score from second on a Pioneer error to give the Warhawks the lead for good.
Freshman
Makena Creekmore (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) pitched the final two innings, stranding two runners in the sixth and tossing a 1-2-3 seventh to improve to 2-0 for the season. Sophomore
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) started and pitched the first three frames, and sophomore
Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) tossed the fourth and fifth to set up Creekmore.
Senior
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) posted three hits to lead the offense, and Pflugradt and junior shortstop
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) added two hits apiece. The two teams combined for 19 hits and 10 walks in the contest but left a combined 24 runners on base.
UW-Whitewater looks to continue action Friday against UW-River Falls at van Steenderen Softball Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
