Softball Increases Win Streak to Six

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team continued its busy week Thursday afternoon by winning a pair of games against Carthage in a non-conference doubleheader at van Steenderen Softball Complex.

The Warhawks (13-7 overall) posted a 12-2 victory in six innings in the first game, and concluded the day with a 2-0 triumph in the nightcap.

In the opener, UW-Whitewater broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run homer by senior left fielder Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) and didn't look back.

Sophomore pinch hitter Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) clubbed a walkoff, three-run homer to deep centerfield with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to end the contest.

Klotz finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in, and sophomore right fielder Megan Schweitzer (Appleton, Wis./East) posted two hits and two runs scored. Sophomore first baseman Mattie Klingenmeyer (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) knocked in two runs, and freshman designated player Vera Pflugradt (Lake Zurich, Ill./Stevenson) recorded one RBI.

Freshman Makena Creekmore (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) pitched four innings and struck out seven batters to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the year. Freshman Sarah Hutchinson (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) tossed a pair of hitless, scoreless innings in relief.

In Game 2, sophomore Dani Biesiada (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) tossed a complete-game shutout, holding the Lady Reds (13-13) to only three hits in the contest. She struck out five without a walk to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Klotz plated a run in the first inning with a triple down the right field line to score Schweitzer, who knocked in a run in the second with an infield hit.

Junior centerfielder Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) contributed two hits and one run scored to lead the offense.

The Warhawks visit Chicago Friday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The games were rescheduled from Saturday with inclement weather in the forecast.
