Men’s Hoops Falls to UW-Oshkosh

The No. 19 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team fell to No. 21 UW-Oshkosh, 69-67, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference contest Wednesday night.

With 17 seconds remaining in play and down one, the Warhawks had possession for a chance to take the lead.  After a timeout with seven seconds left, the Warhawks got a shot off, but missed the basket and the Titans got the rebound to hold the lead and get the victory.

Senior guard Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) led the UW-Whitewater with a career-high 28 points and six rebounds in the matchup.  Junior guard David Sachs (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) tallied 18 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Warhawks took the lead for the first time in the game with a 3-pointer from Sachs and 16 minutes remaining in the half.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh continued to trade baskets in the first half, tallying 9 lead changes in the half and 3 ties.

The Warhawks took the lead by seven, which was their largest of the half, with a basket from Brown and 7:21 remaining.

Brown sank another jumper with 38 seconds remaining in the period to regain the lead for the Warhawks, but the Titans answered with a basket to lead the Warhawks (16-6 overall, 6-5 WIAC) 33-32 at the half.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh (17-5 overall, 7-5 WIAC) continued to trade baskets in the second half, recording eight lead changes and six ties in the period.

Sachs found junior guard Mitchell Pfeifer (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) behind the arc, and Pfeifer knocked down the jumper with 15:23 remaining in the second half to give the Warhawks 42-39 lead.

UW-Whitewater held the lead for the next eight minutes of play.  A turnover by the Warhawks resulted in a Titans' basket and UW-Oshkosh took the lead.

UW-Whitewater climbed back on top. Brown finished a layup with two minutes remaining in play to give the Warhawks a three point lead, but the Titans answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game.

With one minute remaining in play and down one, the Warhawks had possession of the ball and Sachs hit the mid-range jumper, got fouled, and finished the 3-point play to give the Warhawks a two-point lead.

On the next possession, UW-Oshkosh was fouled on a layup to convert for a 3-point play and to regain the lead by one with 41 seconds remaining in the game.

UW-Whitewater committed a turnover, and the Titans missed two free throws on the other end to set up the Warhawks' final opportunity.

UW-Oshkosh only allowed the Warhawks to attempt 14 three-point baskets in the contest compared to its 25 attempts.  Each team shot 51 percent in the contest and the Titans finished 10-of-17 at the line compared to 7-of-12 from the line for UW-Whitewater

The Warhawks continue WIAC play Saturday, Feb. 10, against UW-River Falls in River Falls, Wis. at 5 p.m.
