The No. 22 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team was unable to overcome a tough third quarter Saturday afternoon in a 68-63 setback against Coe (Iowa) in a non-conference matchup at Kachel Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard
Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) posted a team-best 17 points to go along with three rebounds. Senior forward
Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half and added eight rebounds and two steals, and senior forward
Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) collected 11 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
The Warhawks (4-3 overall) were held to 39.4 percent shooting, but held a 35-28 rebounding advantage that led to a 19-6 margin in second-chance points and forced 17 turnovers by the Kohawks. UW-W was outscored 17-9 in the third quarter, a stretch that proved to be the difference in the contest.
Coe (5-2) held an 18-17 lead through one quarter after shooting 50 percent from the floor in the period and knocking down four 3-pointers. UW-Whitewater maintained pace with a spread scoring effort (six different players scored) and a 10-5 rebounding advantage.
The Warhawks scored nine of the first 11 points in the second to take a 27-20 lead at the 4:40 mark. The team took its largest lead of the game on a 3-point play by Freckmann with 54 seconds to go in the half.
The Kohawks grabbed a 38-37 lead midway through the third quarter, but senior center
Becky Deichl (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) responded with a baseline jumper to give UW-Whitewater the lead back.
Coe matched its largest lead of the contest at four points minutes later, but Deichl answered again with a layup to make it 43-41 with 2:09 remaining in the frame.
The Kohawks tallied the last three points of the second and the first two of the fourth to take a 48-43 advantage, their largest of the game.
Coe extended its lead to seven by the 8:11 mark of the fourth.
Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) got UW-Whitewater to within one at the 4:52 mark following a pair of second-chance baskets.
After the Kohawks extended their lead to six, Freckmann brought the team to within two on a layup before Coe responded at the other end with a 3-pointer.
Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) brought the Warhawks back to within one possession at 63-60 with 48 seconds on the clock. The Kohawks hit three free throws in the waning moments to hold on.
The Warhawks continue non-conference play with a visit to MSOE Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
