The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team won its first dual of the 2018-19 season Wednesday night with a 34-9 triumph over Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe UW-Stevens Point at Kachel Gymnasium.
The Warhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC) claimed five consecutive matches, including two by fall, after the intermission to take control of the contest against the Pointers (0-1, 0-1).
Junior
Riley Kauzlaric (Coal City, Ill./Coal City) and freshman
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) scored back-to-back pins to give UW-Whitewater control of the match. At 184 pounds, Shinhoster, the reigning WIAC Wrestler of the Week, registered his third fall of the season, pinning Austin Stebane in 20 seconds. Kauzlaric followed with another first-round pin, downing Ross Agg in 42 seconds at 197 pounds.
Junior
Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) contributed four points with his 15-2 major decision at 141 pounds.
Seniors
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North),
Jordan Festge (Madison, Wis./Madison East), junior
Ryder Sigler (Fredonia, Wis./Cedarburg) and sophomore
Mac Casella (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) each collected decisions. Casella posted an 8-1 decision at 149 pounds, and Sigler followed with a 3-1 win at 165 pounds against Jordan Weinzetl, who is in the "Honorable Mention" section in the D3wrestle.com national rankings.
Bonomo scored an 8-3 decision at 174, and Festge closed the dual with a 4-2 triumph at 285 pounds.
Junior
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) earned six points at 125 pounds on a UW-Stevens Point forfeit.
At the intermission of the dual, the Warhawks recognized two-time national champion
Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) and presented him with a framed singlet. Newman claimed back-to-back titles at 184 pounds in 2017 and 2018, becoming the program's second two-time national champion. The amateur Mixed Martial Arts fighter took time to sign autographs prior to the dual.
UW-Whitewater visits the CUW Open this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon.
