Wrestling Splits on First Day at National Duals

The No. 6 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team finished 1-1 competing against a pair of nationally ranked opponents on Thursday at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals at Fort Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
 
The Warhawks (6-4 overall) shut out No. 17 Chicago by a 56-0 score to start the day before being defeated by No. 4 Ithaca (N.Y.), 31-10.
 
Sophomores Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg), Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) and Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) were victorious in both duals at their respective weight classes.
 
Rice, ranked ninth in the nation at 133 pounds by both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com, pinned Chicago's Louis Demarco before besting Ithaca's Tito Colom by major decision, 13-1. He improved his record to 9-4 for the season.
 
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), ranked 10th at 125 pounds by D3wrestle.com, posted a pin over Chicago's Ryan Boncamper and a 10-8 decision over Ithaca's Ferdinand Mase, who is listed as a "Contender" by D3wrestle.com, to collect his 12th and 13th wins of the year.
 
Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), ranked No. 6 by D3wrestle.com, moved to 13-2 on the season with a pin in 55 seconds over Alec Gleason of Chicago and an 8-1 decision over Ben Brisman of Ithaca, who is ranked as a "Contender" by D3wrestle.com.
 
Against Chicago (5-1), UW-Whitewater registered five consecutive pins to close the match. Senior Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) at 197 pounds, junior Nichoas Bonomo at 174 and freshman Dylan Uzumecki (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) at 285 all registered second-period falls.
 
Junior Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) at 184 and sophomore Ryder Sigler (Fredonia, Wis./Cedarburg) at 165 added third-period pins. Senior Austin Quartullo (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and junior Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) were winners by major decision at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.
 
The Warhawks continue action Friday at 8 a.m. Central Time against the winner of tonight's No. 15 UW-La Crosse/Millikin (Ill.) dual.
